INTRODUCTION MODES FOR TWO may be used in the piano ensemble class and as supplementary material in keyboard musicianship classes. Although much of the material is based on twentieth-century compositional practices, there is a reasonable representation of the more traditional sounds. The brief explanatory notes found in the appendix on page 34 may be studied after the students have had an opportunity to discover some of the various concepts in the musical score. It is hoped that these notes might help the student in his search for greater musical understanding. Finally, the composer hopes that your experience in playing and performing these duets will be as enjoyable as his was in composing them. David A. Karp Publisher's Note: Dr. Karp, a graduate of Manhattan, School of Music and the University of Colorado, is presently associate professor of piano and piano pedagogy at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas. Before coming to Southern Methodist University, Dr. Karp was chairman of the Piano Department at the University of Denver. He also served as Director of Music for Temple Emanuel in Denver, Colorado. He has performed in many recitals, appeared as guest artist with the Denver Symphony Orchestra and Dallas Civic Symphony, and participated as pianist for the recording of an anthology of clarinet and piano music. Dr. Karp is a frequent lecturer for music organizations and serves as a judge for state, regional and national piano competition.
